Living in harmony with nature and the universe's natural flow

Harmony and flow

These ancient arts are rooted in the principles of Yin and Yang and the Tao philosophy, which emphasise living in harmony with, and learning from the wisdom of nature and the universe's natural flow.

They offer a path of self-renewal, bringing great joy and improved wellbeing when practiced consistently.

Hello, I'm...

Joss Sargent

My journey with Tai Chi and Qi Gong began many years ago in Hong Kong, during which the beauty and power of these practices captivated me. A couple of years ago, a major operation led me to reconnect with these ancient Chinese arts. I resumed my practice in the serene mountains of Bali and continue to learn and evolve with Tai Chi Bali, and as a member of the Taoist Tai Chi Society.

Healing ancient practices

For health, happiness and harmony

Qi Gong means 'energy practice' and began approximately 4,500 years ago in the time of the Yellow Emperor.

It is deeply intertwined with the philosophy of Tao (yin and yang) and the Chinese way of life.

Originally, Qi Gong was based on Taoist and Buddhist healing techniques that improve the flow of energy between humans and nature.

Today, Health Qi Gong encourages regular practice of breathing, stretching and meditation to increase the flow of Qi (natural healing energy and what Chinese philosophy describes as the body's innate intelligence). Put simply it's the body's ability to regulate its internal environment to create better health and harmony.

There are five elements of Qi Gong - Wood, Fire, Earth, Metal and Water, all of which represent aspects of nature and the human body.

There are four categories of Qi Gong - Health, Medical (Chinese Medicine), Martial (Tai Chi Chuan) and Spiritual.

Originally, Tai Chi Chuan was a spiritual practice for self-improvement which began 1000 years ago with Taoist monks experimenting with moving meditation.

Later, the Chinese military leaders combined their own style of martial arts and Shaolin Qi Gong into the original Taoist system and became a powerful martial art for self-defence.

Current teachings of Tai Chi for Health combine slow, simplified martial arts movements into a relaxed aerobic set focused on improving health and makes it look and feel very similar to Health Qi Gong.

Both have their roots in Tao philosophy and Yin Yang theory, and both are forms of mind-body exercise. Both have health benefits that can stimulate efficient qi circulation, loosen the joints, massage the organs and energise the brain.

The main difference is that the original Tai Chi Chuan was created as a martial art and incorporates martial arts into moving meditation for self-defence with health benefits.
